The FSC (Forest Seardship Council) is working in line with this principle and is actively involved in the promotion of ecologic, fair and economically feasible exploitation of the forests. This non-governmental organisation works in over 80 countries of the world and was founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1993.

The FSC label on a timber or paper product clearly indicates that the product is of responsible forestry origin. And that it was not intermixed with non-certified, i. e. non controlled wood or paper on its ways to the consumer, via the entire processing and commercial chain. Products having their FSC label ensure exploitation of the woods in compliance with social, economic, and ecologic needs of current and future generations.

The FSC label is synonymous with a consistently reliable process: Ten principles and 56 indicators were developed to provide for the basis of the worldwide FSC forest exploitation standards. Forests which are exploited in compliance with these standards can be granted FSC certification. Consumer buying FSC labelled products actively contribute to sustainable forest exploitation all over the world.
